Most individuals have at least one bad habit that can directly or indirectly affect badly their health. Smoking is one of the most common bad habits that greatly affect our oral health and doe not only affect our heart and lungs. Nicotine and smoke from tobacco and cigarettes causes blood vessels to constrict resulting to reduced distribution of oxygen and nutrients to the gum tissues leading to gum infection. Smoking also reduces the body’s ability to fight infections. Smokers are at greater risk of bacteria that can cause more aggressive gum infection and gum disease.

The link between gum infection and smoking is caused by the suppressed immune system because of smoking and tobacco in which it reduces its ability to fight against infection. Smoking slows down the healing process of gum tissues because it hinders the growth of blood vessels and it also causes plaque and tartar formation, bone loss and damage of gum tissues. To effectively prevent gum infection, it does not only take a good oral hygiene but to avoid the factors that greatly contributes to the occurrence of gum infection which includes smoking.
